Living Strapped To a Rollercoaster – Living Life With Bipolar

Bipolar disorder (A.K.A, Manic Depression) falls under the category of a mood disorder. It is characterized with persistent changes in mood, with periods of either elevated moods (mania) or extremely low moods (depression). A person often shifts between high moods and low moods (mood swings) and is often found to be well between the episodes of their mood swings.

Bipolar disorder usually develops in adolescent years or early adulthood. Stress is a common trigger for early episodes of bipolar disorder, however, after a number of repetitions, the episodes of mania or depression can develop without any identifiable trigger.

Dr.Vihan Sanyal, a leading psychotherapist explains “Bipolar Disorder is a serious mental illness which requires appropriate diagnosis and treatment. People diagnosed with this disorder and their loved one’s need to be well informed about the illness. They need to understand the nuances of the disorder, the treatment options available to them and how to manage the symptoms of the disorder.”

Bipolar 1 Disorder: People who suffer from bipolar 1 usually regularly experience mania as well as extended periods of hypo-mania, along with psychosis (Hallucinations and delusions). At times a person with Bipolar 1 may require hospitalization for their condition.

Bipolar 2 Disorder: People with Bipolar 2 experience moods swings, including symptoms of hypomania, which usually last from a few hours to a few days. They, however, don’t experience psychotic episodes.

Mixed States: Here the person experiences symptoms of mania and depression at the same time. As the name suggests, it’s a mixed emotional state. A person may feel like laughing while crying and feel sad yet feel the urge for high levels of activity.

Winston Churchill,George (Lord) Byron, Ludwig van Beethoven, Vincent Van Gogh, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Chris Brown, Mel Gibson, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Slater, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Demi Lovato have reportedly suffered from bipolar disorder.

Hypomania: is a state of elevated mood during which activity and thought speeds up. The person has less need to sleep, their mood is high, and they experience an overwhelming sense of wellbeing.

They often show irritation and intolerance towards other people. Ideas may flow quickly and thought processes are relatively intact. The person feels well and in control, but may not understand the consequences of their behaviour and may react angrily if confronted. Judgment is affected and the person may become unable to make complex decisions.

Mania: In a manic state, thinking can become disjointed or distorted and the person may not make sense to other people. For example, the person may be talking so fast that others cannot understand them. Hallucinations and delusions can occur, which will appear very real to the person experiencing them. During a manic episode, the person may be at risk of accidental injury, as they may not be capable of looking after themselves or making decisions in their own best interest. For example, a person may spend too much money without being able to recognise the consequences and find themselves in serious debt.

Depression: Is a condition marked by extreme low mood and lack of interest and pleasure. Thoughts become slower. Thinking becomes difficult and it takes time to make decisions. The person may be incapable of or uninterested in performing everyday tasks and even getting out of bed in the morning.

Bipolar disorder can occur from a Genetic Disposition along with stressful life situations. It can also be a result of:

ü Physical Illnesses

ü An Infection Affecting The Brain.

ü Use Of Recreational Drugs

ü Excessive Use Of Alcohol

ü Certain Medications

Ø Increased energy levels and restlessness

Ø Inflated self-esteem

Ø Racing thoughts and rapid speech

Ø Feeling of euphoria and of wellbeing

Ø Extreme irritability, distractibility and tantrums

Ø Decreased sleep requirement

Ø Poor judgment and inability to weigh up consequences

Ø Increased sexual drive and vulnerability of being sexual exploited

Ø Living in denial that they are OK and there is nothing abnormal in their behaviour

Ø Overspending and taking risks

Ø feelings of sadness or emptiness

Ø Increased appetite or a complete lack of appetite

Dr.Sanyal Say’s “ People need to realize that they are not behaving the way they are intentionally. Especially family members need to be empathetic towards them and be sensitive towards their needs. If someone had a physical ailment and were in pain, would we ignore them or tell them to behave in a specific manner? No, we won’t. It is the same with any form of mental illness. We often discount the severity of the illness or lose patience with a loved one battling Bipolar Disorder because we don’t fully understand the nature of the illness. Patience, care and support is required when dealing with Bipolar”

One can learn to increase their resilience level during stressful situations and equip themselves with tools to bounce back from emotionally draining events. This can prevent many of the symptoms of mental illness. There is currently no cure available for Bipolar Mood Disorder. There are, however, the following treatment options available from a clinical perspective:

Medication: There are a number of medications available to treat all types of Bipolar Disorder.

Psychotherapy: There are effective techniques to help people manage the symptoms of Bipolar Disorder. Counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, NLP are all useful in treating Bipolar.

Dr.Sanyal explains “Medication along with therapy is required for the treatment and management of Bipolar Disorder. In most cases a person living with this illness is required to be on medication for life. I have seen people manage their condition a lot better after being treated with psychotherapy along with medication. Once a person starts to experience the benefits of therapy then they are often able to function wonderfully with the least amount of medication in their system. Anything is possible with patience and perseverance.”

First it made me angry then I laughed so hard as it cannot come more framed then this. I am sorry that you have to go through this .That’s the level of them. You stay HIGH and keep using your voice. We love you,” Aarti wrote.

“@anuragkashyap72 has forced himself on me and extremely badly. @PMOIndia @narendramodi ji, kindly take action and let the country see the demon behind this creative guy. I am aware that it can harm me and my security is at risk. Pls help,” Payal had tweeted.

Kashyap has denied such allegations.

“Kya baat hai, itna samay le liya mujhe chup karwane ki koshish mein. Chalo koi nahin. Mujhe chup karaate karaate itna jhooth bol gaye ki aurat hote hue doosri auraton ko bhi sang ghaseet liya. Thodi toh maryada rakhiye, madam. Bas yahi kahunga ki jo bhi aarop hain aap ke sab bebuniyaad hain (Wow, it took you so long to try to silence me. Never mind. In the process of silencing me, you dragged other women in this, despite being a woman. Please have some dignity, madam. All I want to say is that every allegation is baseless),” Kashyap wrote on Twitter.

Anurag Kashyap gets support from colleagues after MeToo row

Earlier on Sunday, in a series of Twitter posts in Hindi, Kashyap dismissed the allegations, dubbing it an attempt to “silence” him.

Anurag Kashyap

Mumbai, Sep 20 : Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap”s friends from the film industry, Taapsee Pannu, Anubhav Sinha, Tisca Chopra and Surveen Chawla, have come out in support of the director after actor Payal Ghosh accused him of sexual harrassment.

On Saturday, Ghosh took to Twitter, claiming that the “Gangs of Wasseypur” director was sexually inappropriate towards her, an allegation Kashyap called “baseless”.

Ghosh, 30, tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi in her tweet, requesting him to take action against the filmmaker.

Pannu, who collaborated with Kashyap on the 2018 romantic-drama “Manmarziyaan”, took to Instagram and wrote that the filmmaker was “the biggest feminist” she knew.

“For you, my friend, are the biggest feminist I know. See you on the sets soon of yet another piece of art that shows how powerful and significant women are in the world you create,” the “Thappad” actor wrote.

Sinha said the existence of the #MeToo movement is to amplify voices of harassed women and it should not be misused.

“It is the joint responsibility of women and men both to carefully protect the sanctity of #Metooindia. It is a very very very important movement that should not be misused for any other reason but the dignity of women,” Sinha tweeted, tagging Kashyap.

Chawla, who worked with the filmmaker on his two-part Netflix series “Sacred Games”, said the allegation against the director reeked of “opportunism”.

“Let them creep. Let them crawl. You my friend, as always stand tall. These false flag bearers of feminism… Opportunism? They dont honour men like you. For their lack of knowledge in knowing know who you really are, and claims they make, that are just so bizzare.”

In a subsequent tweet, Chawla said Kashyap”s legacy is stronger than the allegation.

“Your life, your work and the women you create with your craft…speak volumes about you. I have the privilege to know the real feminist in you, I take the honour my friend to stand for you! @anuragkashyap72,” she added.

Chopra, who featured alongside Kashyap and Chawla in the short film “Chhuri”, said the filmmaker was one of the biggest supporters of talent, be it men or women.

“To know my friend @anuragkashyap72 is to know generosity, honesty and decency at its core .. even a cursory look at his work reveals his worldview on women .. don”t know a bigger supporter of talent, men or women,” she tweeted.

Earlier on Sunday, in a series of Twitter posts in Hindi, Kashyap dismissed the allegations, dubbing it an attempt to “silence” him.

The 48-year-old director has been vocal against the criticism and vilification of Bollywood by celebrities and trolls online.

“Such a long time was taken to shut me up, never mind. (But) while shutting me up, you lied so much that you dragged other women also in it. Please maintain some dignity madam. All I will say is that all your allegations are baseless,” Kashyap tweeted.

Post her revelation, Ghosh found support in National Commission for Women, with its chairperson Rekha Sharma assuring the actor that the NCW will take cognisance of the case.
