Kerala Nun Rape Case: Key witness found dead in Punjab’s Jalandhar

Jalandhar, Oct 22: Father Kuriakose Kattuthara, a key witness in the Kerala Nun Rape case against Bishop Franco Mulakkal was found dead in Punjab’s Jalandhar on Monday. 

The  62-year old was used to live at St. Paul’s Church in Dasuya, where he took his last breath.

Speaking to ANI, AR Sharma, DSP Dasuya said “He used to live at St. Paul’s Church in Dasuya. He was found dead there. He was 62. The matter will be investigated. I have been informed that no injuries have been found”.

“It was found that he vomited over the bed. Blood pressure tablets were found at the spot. An investigation is underway. In our notice, no security was provided to him”, the police official added.

Meanwhile, the Deceased’s family has raised suspicions and filed a police complaint with Alappuzha police seeking inquiry into his death.

The deceased priest’s cousin K. Johnny told the media in Kerala that he got a call from Punjab that Father Kuriakose Kattuthara was not responding to the knocks on his door.

“When they forced open the door, he was found dead,” Johnny said, adding that his cousin was not sick. However, he was suffering from lifestyle diseases.

“Ever since he took a position against Bishop Mulakkal, he feared something bad might befall him,” said Johnny.

This comes nearly a week after, the rape accused Bishop was granted a conditional bail by the Kerala High Court.

The court asked the Mulakkal to not enter the South Indian state and surrender his passport.

After three days of interrogation, the Bishop was arrested on September 21 for repeatedly raping and sexually abusing a nun between 2014 and 2016.
