A young man, who shares his surname with the dead Hizbul commander Burhan Wani, topped a recruitment exam and joined the Border Security Force (BSF).
The young man, 26, Nabeel Ahmad Wani will join BSF as an assistant commandant. Nabeel was in Delhi on Sunday to meet Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. Rajnath said he was really happy to meet Nabeel. “The success story of Nabeel shows that youth in Jammu and Kashmir have a lot of potential, his success will inspire many young boys and girls in the state,” he added.
Her mother (Hanifa Begum) was contacted by Times of India and she spoke on the phone: “I am very happy. My son’s dream has been fulfilled. I know he will work with honesty and dedication and will bring laurels to the country.” Begum added, “Every boy and girl (in the Valley) should follow their dreams and they will achieve them one day. They should work hard and make India proud.”
Government officials said that with Nabeel joining the force the Kashmiri youth will understand that they can focus on their education and get good jobs which will improve their lives and will help to build a stronger Jammu and Kashmir.
Nabeel has a B.Tech degree from Pathankot, he told the media that in Kashmir unemployment is the biggest problem and only education can solve it.
“The more educated we are; the better jobs we will get. We cannot get education by taking up stones but by holding a pen,” Nabeel, currently a contractual junior engineer in Udhampur, said.
I had made it my aim to join the security forces. I appeared in various exams, including for the armed forces and BSF. I am happy I topped the BSF assistant commandant exam. I belong to a village. My mother and father supported me,” he said.
He did his B.Tech in 2012. He used to teach while studying so that he could earn and send funds to his sister studying in Chandigarh. Earlier, Wani gave the same exam for assistant commandant in 2013 but sadly, he was unable to clear it. This year he topped.
Nabeel’s father was a school teacher. After the loss of his father, two years ago, his mother supported his dreams.
