Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Jammu and Kashmir to inaugurate the country’s longest road tunnel, Chenani-Nashri and to share his ideas with the public at Battal Ballian in Udhampur amid multi- tiered security but there is another scenario that must be looked into ie how the Jammu and Kashmir situation has changed in a span of just two years time from 2015 when for the first time BJP formed government in the state in alliance with People’s Democratic Party.
Kashmiris pelting stones at Indian troops and police has been a common phenomenon but the new development of Kashmiri locals hindering the military operation against the militant has initiated a new debate. During the previous governments regime, Kashmiris were against militants but now they have become sympathetic towards militants in the sense that they help them to escape from the area of operation earmarked by the Army to kill the militants.
Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir SP Vaid has informed Union minister of State Dr Jitendra Singh that Pakistan ISI is hell bent to instigate and provoke innocent young boys to come out form their houses and pelt stone at security forces during the encounter of terrorists so as to aggravate the situation against India’s national interest.
The Kashmir government must guard against the blunder of giving Kashmiri people the impression that it acts in a manner that does not differentiate between civilian protests and terrorist activities.
It’s high time that BJP the main partner in the Mehbooba Mufti government should refrain from pushing the PDP to such an extent that it loses the trust of the Kashmiri people. The fact of the matter is that Narendra Modi government at the centre is unaware of the ground realities of Kashmir situation and again the BJP leaders are trying to implement the same type of politics by liquidating the PDP (the regional partner) and projecting Mehbooba Mufti as a failed chief minister.
But the ground reality is that BJP has no replacement for PDP as national Conference had already tasted BJP’s partnership in the past and had gone on record to never ally with it and BJP has now no other alternative but to assist Ms Mufti in initiating a dialogue with all sections of the Kashmiri people. Government should adopt new radical political thinking and innovative counter-insurgency doctrine so as to minimize the prob ability of civilian deaths and avoid mere sloganeering of Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas by engaging all sections of the Kashmiri people.
This is the right time for the Modi government to correct its policies towards Kashmir lest it may fall into total chaos.
