Mumbai, Jan 6: The police on Saturday arrested Yug K. Pathak, the son of a retired DGP-level IPS officer and the co-owner of The Mojo’s Bistro fire which claimed 14 lives.
“He has been booked under the stringent IPC Section 304 pertaining to culpable homicide not amounting to murder,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Patil.
The son of an IPS officer K.K. Pathak — who had served as police commissioner of Pune and Nagpur, besides other important postings — Yug had been questioned last week as part of the investigation into the blaze which also left 55 persons injured, news agency IANS.
On December 30, the police had filed three first information reports against at least two of the pubs – The Mojo’s Bistro and 1Above — besides Ramesh Govani, the owner of the sprawling Kamala Mills Compound, Lower Parel, where the establishments are located.
The police action was initiated after the Mumbai fire brigade report revealed that the availability of hukkah (burning charcoal, combustible hukkah material) at both the pubs and delay in informing the fire brigade, were among other reasons that led to spreading of fire.
The committee stated that the fire began from the pub Mojo’s bistro and not from the restaurant 1Above as believed earlier.
The report also claimed that there were several violations of fire safety norms by both Mojo’s bistro and 1Above, news agency ANI reported.
The inquiry committee has recorded statement of around 10 people, with help of video on social media and several news portals too, to conclude the reason behind the blaze.
Fourteen people killed, while more than 30 others were injured, after a massive fire broke late night on December 28 at a building in Kamala Mills Compound in Lower Parel. The blaze reportedly had allegedly broken out from the ‘1Above’ rooftop restaurant and later spread across the area.
