Justice Bobde: Peacekeeper, sharp observer on matters of faith

As Dhavan was building the case against Lord Ram’s birthplace, Bobde queried, “So the only thing we need to see is can the piece of land have certain rights or suffer certain liabilities.”

New Delhi, Sep 14 : Justice S.A. Bobde, one of the Supreme Court judges on the Constitution bench hearing the Ayodhya land dispute, has hit the headlines for asking sharp questions to senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan, who is representing the Muslim parties in the matter. Seemingly, he is also called the peacekeeper in the family whenever a crisis imbues the top judiciary.

Dhavan, who is at his best in displaying oratory skills to build a strong case for the Muslim parties, is often probed by Justice Bobde by pointed queries originating from the aspect of faith and its relevance in the legal system.

On Friday, while the Muslim parties’ counsel was questioning the rationale of the belief in the disputed site in Ayodhya as being the birthplace of Ram, Bobde quipped, “Kaaba is sculpted or Swayambhu, self-existent.” Dhavan replied it is recognized as intrinsically divine.

Earlier, he had queried, was there any occasion before 1989 for anyone to assert that the birthplace was a juristic person, subject to law.

As Dhavan was building the case against Lord Ram’s birthplace, Bobde queried, “So the only thing we need to see is can the piece of land have certain rights or suffer certain liabilities.”

Earlier in the week, Bobde had asked him to clarify the status of Shebait, a person who serves the deity.

Bobde is a former Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. He is also serving as the Chancellor of Maharashtra National Law University. With a tenure of eight years in the Supreme Court of India, he is in line to be Chief Justice of India after the superannuation of Justice Ranjan Gogoi on November 17. He is due to retire on 23 April 2021.

According to sources, Bobde stepped up to broker peace between then Chief Justice Dipak Misra and the four dissenting senior-most judges — Justices J. Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B. Lokur and Kurian Joseph — after the famous press conference on the irregularities in case allocation, a year and a half ago.

During a lecture in 2018, he said that the rule of law has its origin in India, and the rule of law, known as ‘dharma’ in ancient India, is the foundation of various laws of today.

Justice Bobde was involved in appointing former apex court judge Justice D.K. Jain as the first court-appointed ombudsman for the BCCI under the terms of the newly approved constitution of the cash-rich cricket board.

Justice Bobde is also a part of the powerful Supreme Court Collegium which decides transfers and appointments of judges.

In 2016, Justice Bobde, on a petition of three infants taking into consideration the grave quality of air, banned the sale and stocking of all kinds of firecrackers and issuance of new licences for the same in Delhi and the National Capital Region.

In 2017, Justice Bobde upheld a 19-year-old decision by the Karnataka government to ban and seize the book ‘Basava Vachana Deepti’ edited by seer Mate Mahadevi for hurting the religious sentiments of Lord Basaveshwara’s followers.

Mumbai, May 27 : In a scathing attack on the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, Maharashtra’s ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi on Wednesday demanded Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis to justify his Tuesday’s claims of the state getting huge financial help from the Centre to tackle the Covid-19 crisis.

“The Centre has yet to clear this state’s GST dues of over Rs 18,000 crore for 2019-2020…. other things Fadnavis has claimed have not been received, whatever has come is for ongoing schemes? Where is the money? From where it came and which account it has gone?” senior Shiv Sena leader and Transport Minister Anil Parab pointedly asked.

Nationalist Congress Party state president and Water Resources Minister Jayant Patil said from Fadnavis’ statements, doubts are raised whether he is a friend or enemy of Maharashtra.

“Instead of cooperating, he’s busy vilifying all the good work of the MVA government, the state BJP thought it fit to give money to the PM Care Fund but not the CM Relief Fund, he has no faith in the skills of the youth of our state and made misleading statements,” Patil said.

Congress state chief and Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat targeted Fadnavis saying rather than working with the government or using his good offices to get a good financial package from the Centre, the Opposition is busy trying to topple the MVA government.

The MVA leaders addressed a joint press conference on Wednesday, countered all issues raised by the BJP leader at his media briefing on Tuesday, and termed his statements as imaginary.

Aditi Singh Akhilesh congress raebareli

Lucknow, May 27 : Aditi Singh, the rebel Congress MLA from Rae Bareli, seems to be going the Jyotiraditya Scindia way.

Aditi Singh, on Wednesday, changed her Twitter profile, removing Indian National Congress from it.

It may be recalled that just before switching over to the BJP, Scindia had also dropped INC from his profile on social media.

Aditi Singh’s profile now reads – “MLA Rae Bareli Sadar, Uttar Pradesh. Masters in Management Studies, Duke University. Forever trying to be a practitioner of Ayurveda, Yoga and Plant Based Living.”

The MLA, since September last year, has been charting her own course-one that defies the Congress line.

She welcomed the abrogation of Article 370 in Kashmir at a time when the Congress was opposing the move. She then defied the party line to attend a special assembly session in UP in October.

Aditi Singh has been regularly praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath from time to time.

The Congress has already filed a petition seeking her disqualification from the membership of the state assembly for alleged anti-party activities. However, no action has yet been taken on the petition.

More recently, Aditi Singh slammed the Congress for sending buses for migrant workers and appreciated the work being done by the Yogi government for migrants.

Speculations are rife that Aditi Singh may soon join the BJP and is likely to be named as the party candidate from Rae Bareli in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

New Delhi, May 27 : After an online intelligence firm flagged that a cybercriminal was selling Truecaller records of 4.75 crore Indians on dark web for just about Rs 75,000, the Swedish caller identification app on Wednesday denied any breach of its database. After an online intelligence firm flagged that a cybercriminal was selling Truecaller records of 4.75 crore Indians on dark web for just about Rs 75,000, the Swedish caller identification app on Wednesday denied any breach of its database.

“There has been no breach of our database and all our user information is secure. We take the privacy of our users and the integrity of our services extremely seriously and we are continuously monitoring for suspicious activities,” a Truecaller spokesperson said in a statement.

“We were informed about a similar sale of data in May 2019. What they have here is likely the same dataset as before. It’s easy for bad actors to compile multiple phone number databases and put a Truecaller stamp on it.

“By doing that, it lends some credibility to the data and makes it easier for them to sell. We urge the public and users not to fall prey to such bad actors whose primary motive is to swindle the people of their money,” the spokesperson said.

Online intelligence firm Cyble in a blog on Tuesday said that its researchers have “identified a reputable seller, who is selling 47.5 Million Indians Truecaller records for $1000. The data is from 2019.”

“Looking at the information itself, it has over 47.5 million records, and it includes interesting information such as phone number, carrier, name, gender, city, email, Facebook ID and others,” said the blog post.

On Wednesday, Cyble updated the blog to say that the same hacker has dropped another 600 million records for sale.
