Srinagar, April 6 : Five army soldiers and five terrorists were killed in Sunday’s gunfight on the LoC, in this year’s bloodiest gunfight in any operation against the terrorists in Jammu & Kashmir.

Defence sources said while one soldier and five terrorists were killed on Sunday in the LoC gunfight in Keran sector of J&K, four injured soldiers succumbed in the hospital late last evening.

The terrorists had attempted to exploit inclement weather as it was snowing since the last two days.

“At first light on April 5, one squad of soldiers, following the footsteps on the snow failed to realise that they were on a cornice…It broke…They fell into the nallah. As luck would have it, where they fell, the terrorists were sitting right there. It led to a firefight/Close Quarter Battle at virtually point blank range,” an Army statement said.

“Due to superior training standards of the Army team, inspite of the fall, all five terrorists killed… However, complete squad, five in all, were killed in action.”

The operation to flush out any hiding terrorists in the densely forested area is still going on, but so far there has been no further exchange of fire between the combing army personnel and the militants.

The five martyred soldiers have been identified as – Sub Sanjeev Kumar, Hav. Davendra Singh, Sepoy Bal Krishan, Sepoy Amit Kumar and Sepoy Chhatrapal Singh.

New Delhi, May 29 : Amid reports of growing tension with China at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday questioned the government’s silence on this issue and demanded that the government should come clean on it.

“The government’s silence about the border situation with China is fuelling massive speculation and uncertainty at a time of crisis.” tweeted Rahul Gandhi.

“GOI must come clean and tell India exactly what’s happening,” further said Rahul Gandhi in the tweet.

The government on Thursday invoked a plethora of bilateral agreements signed by India and China to resolve border related issues. Praising the defence forces, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Anurag Srivastava, at a virtual media briefing said that the Indian troops take a very responsible approach towards border management and strictly follow the procedures laid out in various bilateral agreements and protocols with China to resolve any issue that may arise in the border areas.

The two sides, he said, have established mechanisms, both at the military and diplomatic levels, to resolve situations which may arise in the border areas peacefully through dialogue, and continue to remain engaged through these channels. At the same time, India, he said, remains firm in its resolve to ensuring the country’s sovereignty and national security.

Congress attacks Centre for SG’s ‘prophets of doom’ statement in Supreme Court

Kapil Sibal also lashed out on the SG and tweeted, “Sad but true. A law officer in the Supreme Court dealing with the plight of migrants epitomised by the images in the public domain said: Journalists are vultures and High Courts are running parallel governments. This is politics not law!”

Tushar Mehta

New Delhi, May 29 : A day after Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court that there were a handful of people — “prophets of doom” — who were always sceptical about everything, the Congress on Friday questioned the apex court’s silence and alleged that the government was autocratic in its functioning.

Randeep Surjewala, Congress chief spokesperson, said, “Modi Govt’s ‘New Definitions’ in SC – 1)’Some High Courts are running a parallel Govt’ 2) Those criticising the govt are ‘prophets of doom’ 3) Cites instance of a journalist as ‘vulture’.”

“A prelude to complete ‘Autocracy & Abdication of Constitution’!” added Surjewala in his tweet.

The Congress leader also questioned the transfer of the bench in the Gujarat High Court. “No wonder the High Court Bench holding Gujarat Govt accountable for abdication of duty & turning the hospital into a ‘dungeon’ is suddenly changed. Can there be a greater ‘travesty of justice’?” Surjewala said.

“Why is SC silent on such rank subversion of justice?” he asked.

Kapil Sibal also lashed out on the SG and tweeted, “Sad but true. A law officer in the Supreme Court dealing with the plight of migrants epitomised by the images in the public domain said: Journalists are vultures and High Courts are running parallel governments. This is politics not law!”

Referring to the activists spreading negativity on the measures taken by the Centre to provide relief to migrant workers during lockdown, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court on Thursday that “there were a handful of people — ‘prophets of doom’ — who are always sceptical about everything”.

Mehta submitted before a bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, S.K. Kaul and M.R. Shah that these people have been squabbling on social media, have been giving interviews, and writing articles against every institution and have not even acknowledged the humongous efforts made by the government.

Mehta said this has become a trend and the court, as an institution, has to prevent its spread. He added that the trend is that a handful of people give “certificates” to judges of neutrality only if judges abuse the Executive.

He submitted that none of these “prophets of doom” have shown any courtesy to the nation during the pandemic. “The government and ministers are working overnight to see that there is the minimum spread of the virus. All these armchair intellectuals and so-called public spirited people have done nothing to contribute”, Mehta told the Supreme Court.
