JNU upholds rustication of Umar Khalid, Kanhaiya Kumar’s fine

New Delhi, July 5: A high-level inquiry committee of Jawaharlal Nehru University today upheld the rustication of PhD student Umar Khalid and Rs 10,000 fine imposed on former student union president Kanhaiya Kumar in connection with February 9, 2016 incident on varsity campus.

Last year in October, the Delhi High Court had dismissed a JNU appellate order in which disciplinary action was sought against 15 students for their involvement in organising an event condemning the hanging of Afzal Guru, the mastermind of the 2001 Parliament attack, inside the university campus.

The incident had triggered a massive row prompting Delhi Police to arrest Kanhaiya and Umar for their role in organising the event.

The two were among others who were charged with sedition and sent to prison.

During the event, several students allegedly raised anti-national slogans.

Following the incident Kumar, Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya were held in February 2016 on charges of sedition in connection and are out on bail.
