New Delhi, Dec 21: The Delhi police on Friday has finalised the draft chargesheet against students of Jawaharlal Nehru University in the 2016 sedition case .
The chargesheet names former Jawaharlal Nehru University students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar, along with fellow activists Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya as the main accused, in connection with a campus event during which alleged “anti-national” slogans were allegedly raised.This comes after almost three years of the probe into the matter.
The chargesheet draft will be filed in the court soon.It also names eight others, all hailing from Kashmir.
The three – Khalid, Kumar and Bhattacharya – were arrested in 2016 for allegedly shouting anti-India slogans and voicing protests against the hanging of 2001 Parliament attack mastermind Afzal Guru during an event, but were released on bail
Kanhaiya Kumar is likely to contest lok sabha elections from Bihar’s Begusarai, which is also his native place. After the incident, the JNU panel had recommended rustication and imposition of a fine on the student activists.
