Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama: CASO continues ,colleges closed

Srinagar, Sep 4 : Authorities closed colleges and secondary schools in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district as a precautionary measure on Tuesday after a youth was killed and another youth severely injured as security forces allegedly fired bullets and pellets to disperse youth protesting amidst a massive cordon and search operation (CASO) covering 18 villages in Pulwama district of south Kashmir.

In a first major operation by the Indian Army, CRPF and the Jammu and Kashmir police , a massive cordon and search operation (CASO) have been launched in 18 villages in Pulwama and Shopian districts of the state on Monday.Violent protests broke out in Murran and Chewakalan villages of south Kashmir district after special operations group (SOG) of police, army and paramilitary CRPF launched a CASO.

Fayaz Ahmad Wani, 26, was killed in firing by the security forces on Monday in Gusoo village during clashes with protesters and stone pelting mobs.

The areas in south Kashmir have been tense ever since the news spread.

Authorities also ordered suspension of rail services between Srinagar and Pulwama district.

Elsewhere in the valley, the situation remained normal with universities, colleges and schools functioning as usual.

The operation began following reports about the presence of terrorists in the villages of Putrigam, Rohmu, Rajpora, Matrigam, Goosu, Frasipora and others.This massive exercise  came just days after over 10 close family members of the J&K Police personnel were abducted last week.

The Army’s 55 Rashtriya Rifles, 44 Rashtriya Rifles, and 53 Rashtriya Rifles battalions along with units from the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force are carrying out the operations.

Search operations are being carried out in Rohmu, Below, Rajpora, Mitrigam, Frasipura, Gasu, Kucchepura, Chak, Mirgund, Murran, Zagigam, Tukarpura, Kamazipura, Drubgam, Hanjan, Ayangund, Shekharpora villages.

Reports suggested that most of the abducted people were taken taken from Shopian, Kulgam, Anantnag, Pulwama and Awantipora districts.

Reports said that army’s 44RR, 55RR, 53RR, 182BN, 183BN of CRPF and SOG Pulwama launched massive search operation early morning in atleast 10 villages of Pulwama which include Rahmoo, Bellow, Putrigam, Matrigam, Frasipura, Goosu, kuchepura, Murran, Thokerpora and Drabgam.

“So far, there has been no reports of any exchange of fire in any of the villages included in the search,” a police officer said.

This is not the first such operation in the south Kashmir area undertaken by the security forces.

These operations known as area domination operations are usually undertaken to keep the militants on the run and prevent them from establishing a foothold in the region.
