Jammu and Kashmir: Voting underway for final phase of urban local body polls

Srinagar, Oct 16: Voting for the fourth phase of the urban local body elections is being held in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.

A total of 156 candidates are in the fray for 37 wards in two urban local bodies – Ganderbal Municipal Committee and Srinagar Municipal Corporation.

The polling was originally scheduled to take place for 132 municipal wards, but due to the boycott by regional parties, it is being held in only 37 wards.

The municipal polls are taking place after a gap of 13 years in the state.

“Participation is good. I expect that as weather clears, turnout will be better. If someone attempts stone pelting, we’ll take strict action. There are more than 20 CAPF and police jawans at each polling station. Mobile teams are also deployed”, K Poswal, SSP Ganderbal (Jammu And Kashmir) told media.
