Ahmedabad, June 23 :Seychelles President Danny Faure landed in Gujarat for a six-day visit to India, a day after the country’s Parliament has cancelled New Delhi’s planned project to build a naval base in the western Indian Ocean region. India’s strategic interests in the Indian Ocean Region got a big jolt amidst Beijing’s growing economic and strategic footprints in the region.

While debating on the issue in the Parliament, the Opposition lawmakers argued that permitting India to build a naval base on the strategically located island of Assumption would infringe on the country’s sovereignty.

Faure will be accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. He will then meet President Ram Nath Kovind and hold delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He will also address the India-Seychelles Business Forum.

On June 4, Faure had stated that there will be no discussion on the military base project with Modi on his state visit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced India’s plan to set up and develop its first overseas military base at Assumption Island in the Seychelles in March 2015 to boost India’s regional diplomacy and capabilities.

The island nation of the Seychelles, strategically located in the context of sea lanes of communication (SLOCs), has long been an Indian ally.

Since 2003, India has maintained a military cooperation agreement with the Seychelles.

Modi government  has set up a Coastal Radar Surveillance (CRS) system in 2016, and donated three fast-track patrol vessels and one Dornier aircraft to the Seychelles Defense Forces.
