The first formal meeting is taking place between PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and her party legislators, provincial presidents, district presidents at her Fairview residence to discuss PDP-BJP alliance’s future and government formation in Jammu and Kashmir

The agenda of the meeting is to discuss the progress in the  peace and development set for the party by the late chief minister.Party spokesman Nayeem Akhtar said the party has authorised Mehbooba Mufti to take a decision on government formation. “She is yet to speak about government formation to party members but the agenda of peace and development set by the late chief minister Mufti will be discussed .”

The PDP has 28 ministers in the state assembly and needs 16 members to form the government. The state is under the governor’s rule.

Earlier, the PDP had taken a firm stand and asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party should give out concrete assurances for implementing the coalition since it is in power at the Centre.

The 40-day mourning period for the Mufti family will end around February 15 and there  are chances of  a new government  formation after that day.

Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, Mehbooba’s father, died on January 7, and Governor’s Rule was imposed in the state two days later.

BJP leaders in Jammu have said that the final call on government formation will have to be taken by the PDP.

“We will respond positively after the PDP makes the move,” said Sat Paul Sharma, the BJP state president.

BJP sources say a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah with Mehbooba Mufti could take place soon.

But the same sources ruled out any fresh assurances on the alliance agenda.

“Since she will take over as chief minister of the state at a crucial time, there could be a meeting between the prime minister and Mehbooba Mufti and also with Amit Shah,” a BJP leader told
Governor N.N. Vohra has asked senior officials to move fast on preparation of the annual budget, which must be passed before March 31.

PL Punia Congress

Lucknow, May 26 : The Congress has stepped up its attack on the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh, accusing it of putting out fake statistics regarding coronavirus cases and also spreading communal hatred.

Senior Congress leader P L Punia, while addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, said that UPCC president Ajay Kumar Lallu had been sent to jail only because he was helping the migrant workers.

“No one is being allowed to meet the UPCC president and the Congress will not tolerate this injustice,” he said.

Punia alleged that UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath said in an interview to a TV channel that migrant workers were responsible for spreading the corona infection.

Meanwhile, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Aradhana Mishra said that the Yogi government had claimed that 25 lakh migrant workers had returned to UP.

“The government has said that the number of infected persons is 6228 so how can they claim that the 25 lakh migrant workers have brought the infection to UP? The chief minister should explain the basis of his claim,” she said.

Mishra demanded that the state government should come clean on the number of patients, testing figures and preparations made for corona.

Worker in India

New Delhi, May 26 : The judiciary and the government had failed labourers, said the Congress, here on Tuesday, after the Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of miseries of migrant workers, stranded across the country due to the lockdown announced to contain Covid-19 spread.

Terming it one of the worst case of reverse migration, Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill said the rights that couldn’t be enforced on time were meaningless.

“With due respect, the Supreme Court taking cognizance of labourers’ issue after more than 60 days of harsh living and over 80 deaths, is a case of ‘justice delayed is justice denied’,” he said.

The Supreme Court said the media reports had continuously been showing the unfortunate and miserable condition of migrant labourers, walking on foot and cycling long distances.

Issuing notice to the Centre and all states/Union Territories, an apex court Bench, comprising Justices Ashok Bhushan, S.K. Kaul and M.R. Shah, asked them to submit their responses looking into the urgency of the matter.

Stating that the petition will be taken up on Thursday, the Bench asked the Solicitor General to assist the court and bring to its notice all measures taken and to be taken by the Centre by the next date of hearing.

The Bench posted the hearing for May 28 and asked the Registry to serve a copy to Solicitor General Tushar Mehta as well states and UTs.

“Although the central and the state governments have taken measures, yet there have been inadequacies and certain lapses. We are of the view that effective concentrated efforts are required to redeem the situation,” the Bench said.

The court took the cognizance after several petitions were filed, highlighting the plight of migrant workers during the Covid-19 crisis.

Stressing the need for a helping hand to the migrant labourers, the apex court said, “They (migrants) have also been complaining of not being provided food and water by the administration at places where they were stranded or in the way i.e. highways from which they proceeded on foot, cycles or other modes of transport.”
