Jailed Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh moves HC against rape conviction

Chandigarh, Sep 25: Challenging his rape conviction by the CBI special court, Jailed Dera Sacha Sauda sect chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh on Monday approached to the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The counsels of the disgraced self-styled godman filed the petition. However,  the matter is not yet listed by the court for proceedings.

Earlier,in a separate development the CBI court dismissed a plea filed by Khatta Singh, who served as a driver of the sect chief, seeking to record a fresh statement in the murder cases against Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.

On August 25, the special CBI Court in Panchkula convicted Dera Chief in two rape case of female disciples in 1999.

Later, he was awarded with 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of over Rs 30 lakh.

Currently, he is lodged in the District Jail at Sunaria near Rohtak.

His conviction triggered  violence in Panchkula, Sirsa in Haryana and neighboring states  in which at least 38 people were killed  and 264 injured.

The CBI court in Panchkula is hearing two more cases against the sect chief in connection with the murder of former Dera manager Ranjit Singh in July 2003 and  Sirsa-based journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati in October 2002.
