WeFor News Rating- 3.5/5 Stars
What’s Good: Shah Rukh Khan proving why he can do anything, Anushka Sharma at her beautiful best, Imtiaz Ali’s magical touch, Pritam & Irshad Kamil’s brilliance.
What’s Bad: Rushed second half, Thanda climax.
Loo Break: Few in second half.
Watch or Not?: Absolutely! Overall this film is something shouldn’t be missed especially by people who digest romantic dramas well.
Story of Jab Harry Met Sejal is not as complex as we have seen in previous films of Imtiaz Ali. “A tour guide who is lost” this is the plot Imtiaz tried to explore and define love in a new way. Harinder Singh Nehra aka Harry (Shah Rukh Khan) is a tour guide in Holland who is looking for something he has lost. The philosophical twist to this is, he doesn’t knows what he has lost. Then enters our breezy, always saying what’s in her heart Sejal Zaveri (Anushka Sharma).
Harry meets (duh) Sejal (Anushka Sharma in a sickeningly stereotyped, annoying role) when the latter loses her engagement ring while her entire family takes off to India. She has apparently told her parents that she will get back to the country only when she finds the ring.
The first half of Jab Harry Met Sejal will blow the feelings of your heart like a breath of fresh air.
The plot is wafer-thin and it’s been done to death by none other than Imtiaz Ali in each of his earlier films—be it Jab We Met, Cocktail and Tamasha. It’s the routine girl is engaged elsewhere story but she discovers half-way through that her soulmate is someone other. In this case, Sejal is engaged to Rupen but actually ends up falling for Harry. Let’s give the devil his due, Imtiaz’s films do coax and cajole you to take a journey inwards instead of just doing the peripheral one. But in this film, the soul-searching bits between the leads don’t quite add up. What makes this film watchable though is the presence of Shah Rukh and Anushka both of who are in top-form in their Punjabi and Gujarati `impersonations’. In fact, SRK is like old wine, the more he matures, the better he romances. Boy, when he seals it with a kiss, he’s irresistible!
The music is average but Radha will definitely get you to attempt a bhangra-garba mix at your next house party and yes the soulful song hawaein had already made us fall in love with. However, sound advice would be that you actually buy yourself a tour ticket to Europe and soak in the sights for real. Of course, if you’re in the mood for a cheaper option of touring the continent, buy yourself a JHMS ticket and get transported to foreign destinations captured efficiently by cinematographer K U Mohanan, In this case, there’s the added advantage of a Punjabi `munda’ playing your friend, philosopher, lover and guide.
If you’re a fan of Anushka and Shah Rukh Khan, you will love Jab Harry Met Sejal. But if you’re a fan of Imtiaz Ali, you will yearn for the depth he showed in Tamasha and Rockstar.
And you won’t find it reflected in JHMS. But that doesn’t mean Jab Harry Met Sejal is a disappointment. Just don’t go in with any expectations, good or bad, and you should (more or less) have a whale of a time.
Take this as a sign and don’t miss this beautiful journey of life with Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma.
