Italy deploys additional warplanes to Sicily to monitor borders

AMX fighter-bomber aircraft

The Italian Defense Ministry on Friday deployed additional warplanes to Vincenzo Florio airfield near the city of Trapani, in western Sicily, national ANSA news agency reports.

The Trapani Trapani-Birgi airbase has been enforced with four AMX fighter-bomber aircraft and a Predator UAV “in the light of the latest developments in Northern Africa.”

The aircraft and a drone will be used for surveillance missions only and for monitoring Italy’s maritime borders, particularly the area close to the Libyan coast, where migrants are being trafficked to the Italian island of Lampedusa.
