A Russian airstrike killed Islamic State spokesman Mohammad al-Adnani in Syria, the defence ministry said in Moscow.
In a rare public statement, ISIS officially announced the death of Adnani on Tuesday. The Amaq news agency, linked to Islamic State stated that Mohammad al-Adnani had died in Aleppo province.
Adnani was one of the high-profile figures in the jihadist group.
Russia’s claim of killing Adnani in a Su-34 bomber raid comes a day after the United States said that the US-led coalition targeted Adnani in Syria on Tuesday. But US have not confirmed Adnani’s death yet.
