Manipur’s Iron Lady, Irom Sharmila Chanu, who has been fasting for the last 16 years in protest against the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA), has signed a personal release bond of Rs 10,000 at the Imphal court today.
The court granted her bail but is yet to give the release order for the same. While it is unlikely that the order will be granted today, Irom Sharmila will have to remain in judicial custody, with the next day of hearing set for August 23.
While addressing a Press Conference, Irom said ” I want to join politics as I’ve been called the Iron lady of Manipur & I want to live up to that name.”
From today onwards I have ended my fast, says Irom Sharmila in Imphal. She tastes honey to symbolically end the fast.
Sharmila began a hunger strike in November 2000, following the killing of 10 civilians by security forces. She was arrested by the Manipur government in 2000 under section 309 of the Indian Penal Code, which prohibits an attempt to commit suicide.
