As soon as the IAEA closed the book on the possible military aspects of Iran’s nuclear programme,UN experts said that Iran violated a UN Security Council resolution in October by test-firing a missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead,thus leading to calls in the US Congress for more sanctions on Tehran.

The ballistic surface-to-surface missile test was conducted after Iran and six world powers reached a landmark nuclear deal on 14 July. The Security Council endorsed the deal in a resolution on July 20 that also called on Iran not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons.

The United States, France, Britain and Germany asked the Security Council on 21 October to investigate and take “appropriate action” against Iran for the 10 October missile launch.

United Nations Ambassador Samantha Power clearly stated that Iran’s test was a violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1929 which specifically states that “Iran shall not undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using ballistic missile technology.”
Senators stated that launch is an attempt to test the world’s will to respond to Iranian violations of its international commitments.
We strongly believe that the ability of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to prevent Iran from fulfilling its nuclear ambitions must be fortified by a zero-tolerance policy to respond to violations of the agreement and of applicable UN resolutions – and a unified plan of action between the United States and our European allies about what specific responses should be deployed to respond to incremental violations.
