IPL 2020: Stuck to basics, didn’t try anything out of the box, says Bishnoi

Dubai, Sep 21 : Kings XI Punjab leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, who made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut on Sunday against Delhi Capitals, has revealed that he was more excited than nervous and all his focus was on to win the game for his side, which didn’t happen.

Kings XI came out on the wrong side of the result in their opening encounter of the 2020 IPL, losing to Delhi Capitals in the Super Over.

Bishnoi ended with impressive figures of 1/22 despite bowling all his overs outside the powerplay, and bowling to the likes of Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant.

“I was a bit nervous in the beginning, but it was more excitement than nervousness for me to make my debut. I just wanted to do well and help my team win,” said Bishnoi to KXIP.in after the game.

The leggie bowled quicker through the air and kept a tight stump to stump line for the better part of his spell, not allowing the batsmen to free their arms. He was rewarded with the price scalp of Pant during his four-overs spell.

“Bowling against Pant, there was no set plan or strategy in place, I just kept sticking to the basics, didn’t try another out of the box. Just kept bowling how I normally would,” he said.

Kings XI will play their next match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Thursday.

New Delhi, Oct 25 : India’s first World Cup-winning cricket captain Kapil Dev was on Sunday discharged from the hospital after undergoing a successful angioplasty.

He was admitted to the Fortis Escorts Heart Institute in South Delhi after suffering a cardiac arrest last Thursday, following which he had undergone angioplasty surgery as a treatment. Angioplasty is a procedure to restore blood flow through the artery.

“Mr. Kapil Dev got discharged today afternoon. He’s doing fine and can resume his regular daily activity soon. He’ll be under regular follow-up consultation with Dr. Atul Mathur,” a statement from the hospital read.

He was admitted to the hospital at around 1 am on Friday, and Dr Atul Mathur, Director of Cardiology Department successfully performed an emergency coronary angioplasty.

The ‘Haryana Hurricane’ himself tweeted late on Friday night to express his gratitude to his fans and friends. “Thank you all for all the love and concern. I am overwhelmed with the good wishes and well on the road to recovery,” he wrote.

The 62-year-old was working as a cricket expert during the ongoing IPL 2020.

Kapil held the world record for most Test wickets (434) for over six years until it was broken by Courtney Walsh of the West Indies. The other big achievement of Kapil was to lead India to World Cup triumph in 1983, when the team was considered minnows in limited-overs cricket.

He played 131 Tests and 225 ODIs between 1978 and 1994.

I was positive and so was the team, says KL Rahul

“Even when we were sitting on the bottom of the table we didn’t panic. We kept scrapping and we’re really happy that the wins are coming.”

Dubai, Oct 25 : Kings XI Punjab captain KL Rahul said that the team kept up their belief throughout their match against SunRisers Hyderabad on Saturday at the Dubai International Stadium. KXIP could only manage 127/6 batting first but they extraordinarily took seven wickets in the last four overs of the SRH innings to dismiss them for 114.

This meant that Kings XI Punjab have now won their last four games on the trot after going five games without a win in the first half of the league.

“Winning is a habit, which we didn’t find in the first half. Honestly, I’m speechless. Everybody’s chipped in. Low-scoring games is when you realise the importance of those 10-15 runs scored by batsmen, those diving stops and those tight overs,” said Rahul in the post-match presentation ceremony.

“The openers have the freedom to score and I think that’s what happened with SRH as well. I was hoping we didn’t give anything above 40 in the first six, so I was positive and the team was positive.”

Rahul credited the coaching staff for the turnaround they have experienced this season. “The work done is always behind the scenes. Not just the players but the support team. You can’t change a lot in two months but all these guys have pushed the boys to be better and better,” he said.

“Even when we were sitting on the bottom of the table we didn’t panic. We kept scrapping and we’re really happy that the wins are coming.”

Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) on Saturday successfully defended a measly target of 127 and pulled off an extraordinary 12-run win over SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Dubai International Stadium.

With SRH taking their time chasing down the low target, KXIP kept the pressure on them and turned the screws in the death overs. They took as many as seven wickets in the last four overs and conceded just 15 runs. Chris Jordan and Arshdeep Singh bowled the last two overs in which they got two wickets each.

With Arshdeep dismissing Priyam Garg to claim his second consecutive wicket in the 20th over, Khaleel Ahmed puzzlingly defended the hat-trick ball to off-side with SRH needing 13 to win off the last three balls. He then dabbed the next ball to point and started strolling towards the non-striker’s end. He sped up only when he spotted the fielder sprinting towards the ball but by then it was too late and he was run out.

Earlier, SRH turned the screws in the last five overs, conceding just 38 runs and taking two wickets. KXIP ended their innings on 126/7 in their 20 overs. KXIP have thus won their fourth consecutive win of the season and continue their pursuit of a playoff spot.

Brief scores: KXIP 126/7 wkts in 20 overs (Nicholas Pooran 32, KL Rahul 27; Rashid Khan 2/14) beat SRH 114 in 19.5 overs (David Warner 35, Vijay Shankar 26; Chris Jordan 3/17) by 12 runs.
