New Delhi, Feb 19, 2017: Former India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been removed as the captain of the Rising Pune Supergiants for the upcoming season of Indian Premier League on Sunday.
The franchise has decided to name Australia’s Steve Smith as the new skipper.
Talking to media, Rising Pune Supergiants owner Sanjiv Goenka said “Dhoni has not stepped down. We have appointed Steve Smith as the skipper for the upcoming season. Frankly speaking, we did not have a good last season and we wanted someone young to lead the side and revamp it ahead of the upcoming season 10.”
“I have the highest regard for MS Dhoni as a leader and a person. Dhoni continues to be an integral member of our team. He is supportive of the decision keeping the franchise’s best interests in mind,” Goenka added.
Dhoni has extended his full co-operation and is ready to help Smith in decision-making on the field. While Dhoni is expected to keep his place in the side, the wicketkeeper-batsman is likely to be promoted up the order.
However, Dhoni has also been communicated about the decision by the franchise.
“Mahi was cooperation personified when we conveyed the decision to him,” he said.
The wicketkeeper-batsman has shown a lot of success in the IPL as well, winning the tournament with the now defunct franchise Chennai Super Kings in 2010 and 2011. He also led CSK to the T20 Champions League win in 2010 and 2014.
