New Delhi , AUg 21: The Supreme Court bench headed by Justice N. V. Ramana, on Wednesday refused to grant interim relief from arrest to former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and referred his matter to Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi for urgent hearing on his anticipatory bail plea in the INX media case.
Former union minister P Chidambaram was not granted immediate relief by the Supreme Court after he asked for an urgent hearing on his petition against the rejection of anticipatory bail in the INX Media case.
Chidambaram’s lawyers challenged the Delhi High Court’s order which rejected his request for protection from arrest. The CBI told told the top court that it is a “monumental magnitude of money laundering case”.
“The petitioner is a law-abiding citizen and has reputation to sustain in the society. He is a sitting Member of the Rajya Sabha. The antecedents of the Petitioner are impeccable. He has never been an accused of any offence. There is no possibility of his fleeing from justice,” Chidambaram’s petition says, adding that “custodial interrogation is not at all warranted”.
Senior Congress lawyers Kapil Sibal, Salman Khurshid and Vivek Tankha are inside the courtroom representing him.
Lawyers of P Chidambaram sought interim relief by applying Special Leave Petition (SLP) in Supreme Court against yesterday’s order of the Delhi High Court canceling Chidambaram’s anticipatory bail plea.
