Inhuman death of rice mill owner, NHRC sends notice to UP govt

New Delhi, Aug 9: The owner of rice mill Jalal Ahmed was allegedly hacked to death for denying bribery of Rs 1 lakh by the policemen in Rampur district of Uttar Pradesh.

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday while taking a serious note on the death of a rice mill owner due to alleged police torture in Rampur district, issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government.

The commission informed that the police had stepped in the mill premises alleging that illegal activities were being run from there and demanded bribe of Rs 1 lakh from the owner, which was refused by him.

“Thereafter, allegedly, the policemen started beating Jalal Ahmed with rifle butts, fists and boots. The victim started bleeding and fell down. After the policemen left, he was taken to the District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead,” said a statement from the commission.

The Commission observed that the incident if true is very inhuman and highlights abuse of power by police officials. They could have taken lawful action against any alleged illegal activity, instead of using excessive force as mentioned in the news report.

“The commission has issued a notice to the DGP, Government of Uttar Pradesh, calling for a detailed report in the matter within four weeks,” said the statement from the commission.
