French President Francois Hollande arrived at the Rajpath here along with President Pranab Mukherjee for the Republic Day celebrations on Tuesday.
Hollande is the chief guest. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached the Rajpath a few minutes ahead of them.
The crowd broke into an applause when Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar welcomed Modi who then greeted Vice President Hamid Ansari.
A 76-member French Army contingent led by a French military band consisting 48 musicians marching on Rajpath presents a ceremonial salute to the President of India. The French Army contingent is led by Lt Col Paul Bury.
President Pranab Mukherjee awarded Ashoka Chakra to Lance Naik Mohan Nath Goswami of 9 Para (Special Forces)/6th Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles.
