The highly critical editorial concerning Modi in NYT highlighted the weakness of ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in governing the country and choosing Hindu clerics and RSS men to lead states where BJP is in power. This move shows the insecurity of the BJP in delivering the governance and at the same time rebuking the minorities.
The NYT titled ‘Modi’s Perilous Embrace of Hindu Extremists said since he was elected in 2014, Modi has played a “cagey game, appeasing his party ‘s hard-line Hindu base while promoting secular goals of development and economic growth”.
It shows that Modi does not consider men of administrative caliber and proven merits as competent to deliver the government in the state.
This action of appointing Hindu clerics and RSS men (Bajrang Dal, VHP) will open the gates for new other outfits linked to Hindu fundamentalism which will ultimately transform India into a Hindu state similar to Israel being a Jewish State.
But Indian government should be aware that there is a stark difference between Israel and India. India is a pluralistic society having minorities from different religions who enjoy Freedom as per the Constitution while Israel is an isolated state meant for only Jews. After independence in 1947 India has been vocal about the Palestinian cause in view of its secular credentials and any attempt to abandon that path will undermine country’s image in the world.
Modi won the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and 2017 UP elections by promising developing ‘New India’ by keeping intact democratic institutions .On the contrary his said slogan runs opposite to his actions.
Modi’s wishful thinking and intense desires to attain the reputation of former prime minister Indira Gandhi who in the face of stiff opposition from US and China succeeded in creating Bangladesh from East Pakistan and defeating Pakistan army under General Naizi where Indian Army got near about 70000 soldiers surrendered in an unparalleled feat in the history of warfare.
But Modi even then refrains from praising Congress leadership of the past which only shows that he will not let any deserved praise of the past congress leadership be showered till he is in power.
At the same time he and Swami Adityanath are crying hoarse to bring-in the times of Indira Gandhi when women could walk on the roads of Delhi at dead of night and nobody could dared tease them.
But BJP led central government and governments in BJP ruled states have proved to be total failure with daily occurrences of shameful acts of rape, molestation ,chain snatching that is occurring since 2014 and his promises have proved to be hollow(A 13-year old cancer patient from Bikaner was raped by eight teachers for over a year).
India’s Unemployment rate has shot up to a five-year high of 5% in 2015-16 as depicted in a report by Labour Bureau. Poverty caused by unemployment is a ticking bomb for Modi government at the centre as employment is not growing in the ratio the GDP is showing its growth as per the Finance minister Arun Jaitley’s data. There are growing income differences among different income groups.
According to the Fourth Annual Employment & Unemployment report (2013-14) only 16.5% of Indian workers earn a regular wage or salary. According to the fifth annual employment-unemployment survey at all-India level about 77% of the households were reported to be having no regular wage or salaried person.
The need of the hour is to provide jobs, improve economic growth after demonetisation rather than trying to run with the stag and hunt with the hounds.
