NEW DELHI: Bajrang Punia clinched India’s first gold medal at the ongoing 2017 Asian Wrestling Championships in New Delhi on Saturday, the penultimate day of the tournament, after winning his 65kg freestyle final against Lee Seung-chul of Korea.
Punia defeated Lee in an intense bout, in which the Korean led the Indian 2-0 at the end of the first half. Punia made a valiant comeback in the second half to win the contest 6-2. Punia scored his first point by forcing his competitor outside the ring, and followed it with two two-pointers to make it a 5-2 lead.
The Korean camp threw in their protest at that point but could not face the stamina of Punia in the end.
Earlier in the evening, India’s Sarita settled for a silver medal after losing her 58kg freestyle final against Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan.
