New Delhi, May 23, 2017: In a surprising move, an Army Major Leetul Gogoi, who had tied a Kashmiri man in front of a jeep, has been awarded by Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat for adopting such non-violent measure in order to save so many lives on Tuesday.
The Army has confirmed that he was awarded COAS (Chief of Army Staff) commendation for sustained efforts in counter-insurgency operations. The officer was awarded by Army chief Gen Bipin Rawat during his recent visit to Jammu and Kashmir.
The video of April 9 incident in Budgam swirling rounds on social media has evoked anger and shock among Kashmiris, including former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Major Gogoi of the 53 Rashtriya Rifles was in the highlights after a video, shot during the Srinagar Lok Sabha by-poll and posted on social media showed a young man tied to the front of an Indian Army vehicle as a human shield, being paraded in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam to “avoid” stone pelting on security forces.
