India pays tribute to Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev on their martyrdom day

New Delhi, March 23: The nation is paying tributes to freedom fighters – Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev – on their martyrdom day today.

It was on this day in 1931 that Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru were executed after they were sentenced to death in the Lahore conspiracy case.

They were hanged a day before the scheduled date of execution.

A number of programmes have been organised in Punjab and across the country to mark the day.

Paying rich tributes to the martyrs, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that they “sacrificed their lives so that others can live a life of freedom and dignity”.

“The martyrdom of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev was a watershed moment in our history. Every Indian is proud that these three great men belong to our land,” Modi tweeted sharing a video about the martyrs.

PM also remembered politician and activist Ram Manohar Lohia on his birth anniversary and described him as “one of the most remarkable personalities of 20th century India”.

Paying homage to the martyrs, Congress tweeted- ”Our heartfelt tributes to martyrs Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar on Shaheed Diwas today. The entire nation will forever remain indebted to them for their supreme sacrifice.”

Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad tweeted-” My tribute to the great Indian freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev & Rajguru on Shaheed Diwas .”

Former Indian Cricketer Virender Sehwag said- ” 87 years ago,on this day, Shaheed e Azam Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru & Sukhdev Thapar sacrificed their lives for our independence. They were an inspiration then, now and will remain so forever. True icons! #ShaheedDiwas”.

President of Shiromani Akali Dal ‘Sukhbir Singh Badal’ tweeted-”Individuals can be killed, but not their spirit. The spirit of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev still continue to inspire us and evoke a sense of nationalism. My heartfelt tributes to these courageous souls on their Martyrdom Day! #ShaheedDiwas”.

Chief Minister of Punjab ‘Captain Amarinder Singh laid a wreath at the statue of Bhagat Singh and paid floral tributes at the memorial of the martyr’s father, Kishan Singh.

The Punjab government on Friday also launched a campaign to wipe out the drugs menace in the state to mark the martyrdom day of the freedom fighters.

Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis tweeted- ”Our Salutations and tributes to the brave sons of Bharat Mata Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev on #ShaheedDiwas !”.

IT and Textiles Minister Smriti Irani tweeted- ”Tributes to Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru on their Martyrdom Day. Supreme sacrifice made by them for the freedom of our Nation will remain etched forever in our memories. #ShaheedDiwas”.
