India celebrates Makar Sankranti, thousands take dip in holy rivers

New Delhi, Jan 14: Makar Sankranti, a major harvest festival celebrated in various parts of the country, also marks the beginning of warmer and longer days compared to the nights.

Thousands of devotees across the country took a dip in holy rivers braving the cold weather to mark the auspicious Makar Sankranti festival on Monday.

With prayers on their lips, the devotees jostled for space since early hours to take a dip in the holy water at Ganga Sagar, also known as ‘Sagardwip’.

Devotees took holy dip in river Ganga in Varanasi and at Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj to mark the festival.

People aso throng to various temples to seek blessings on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti.
