Illicit liquor kills 16 in Uttarakhand

Roorkee, Feb 8: At least 16 people were killed in Balapur village of Haridwar district in Uttarakhand after consuming illicit liquor, last night. 

Most of the victims died in a hospital, news agency IAN quoted
Director General of Police (DGP) Anil Raturi as saying.

The victims had taken liquor at an event in the village following which most of the people started vomiting.

While 11 victims belong to Jharbera block, where Balapur village is located, and five others belong to nearby Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district.

In the wake of the tragedy, the state government has launched a drive in the area against spurious liquor.
