Lucknow, May 3: Amid the ongoing outrage over the presence of Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s portrait inside the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Uttar Pradesh Labour Minister Swami Prasad Maurya sparked a controversy for praising the Pakistan founder.

On Monday, BJP leader from Aligarh Satish Gautam questioned university vice-chancellor Tariq Mansoor, that why the photograph was allowed. In response to this AMU spokesman Shafey Kidwai said Jinnah was a founder of the university and was granted life membership of the student union.

Following this, calling Jinnah a ‘mahapurush’ Maurya reportedly said, “Jin bhi mahapurushon ka yogdan is rashtra ke nirman mein raha hai yadi unpar koi ungli uthata hai to bahut ghatiya baat hai… (It is shameful for anyone to point a finger on prominent leaders who contributed towards formation of the nation)”.

Reacting to this, another BJP leader Vineet Agarwal demanding his expulsion from the ruling party, adviced the UP Cabinet Minister that if you love Pakistan then you should go there, ABP News reported.

However, when reporters asked Maurya to clarify his remarks on Jinnah, he said that the media was wrong.

“Koi bayaan nahi hai, yeh bayaan aap log baat ka batangar bana ke badhaate hai”, he said.

Earlier, a BJP ally, Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party leader Om Prakash Rajbhar also took a dig at Maurya by describing him as ‘Jinnah’s relative.’

Speaking to media at Rasara in Ballia district on Wednesday, Raj Bhar said “Swami Prasad Maurya uske rishtedar ho sakte hain”.
