Hurricane Harvey

Washington, Aug 31: At least 37 deaths including one Indian student have been reported in the catastrophic hurricane Harvey that drowned  the US state of Texas, according to the media.

Nikhil Bhatia, a student of the Texas A and M University, was rescued from the Lake Bryan on Saturday along with another Indian girl Shalini Singh, but unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.

While his friend is in critical condition.

The unrelenting storm that made land slide on August 25 unleashed its wrath across east of Houston, leaving thousands marooned in flooded homes and forcing the evacuation of a medical facility and even an emergency shelter where residents had sought refuge, reports CNN.

The storm left record-setting rain in Harris County — which claimed 19 deaths — before unleashing 15 inches in the Beaumont area, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said.

However, now flooding in Huston has been weakened to a tropical depression with its centre now located in southwest Louisiana, emergency workers and volunteers went door to door for a fifth day on Wednesday  to rescue victims of the flood.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo in his interview with the CNN, said authorities have received 60,000 to 70,000 calls for help.

“We just pray that the body count won’t rise significantly” , he asserted.

Catastrophic hurricane Harvey is still threatening to dump an additional 3 to 6 inches of rain from northern Louisiana into western Kentucky, whether official said.

Russia protest over pension age

Moscow, Sep 22 (IANS) Members and supporters of Russia’s Communist Party took to the streets of the capital on Saturday to protest unpopular pension reforms planned by President Vladimir Putin.

Putin took measures to soften his proposed hike in retirement age in August by limiting the increase for women to 60 — up from 55 — instead of the initial suggestion of 63, Efe news reported.

But the change of plan has so far failed to quell protests against it. He stood by plans to raise men’s retirement age from 60 to 65.

Protesters held signs emblazoned with slogans such as “Putin Lies”. Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov also spoke at the rally.

The changes have been given a preliminary green-light by the State Duma, Russia’s lower parliament, but have provoked widespread outrage. An opinion poll showed that about 90 per cent of Russians were against increasing the retirement age.
