New Delhi, Jan 20, 2017: Even after the whole nation is struggling with the epidemic, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi called demonetisation. The Election commission-appointed surveillance and expenditure monitoring teams had seized over Rs 80.44 crore of cash, 3 lakh litres of liquor and narcotics valued at Rs 6.55 crore, with the maximum from Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.
Both the states are bounded in assembly elections which are going to held in February.
As per official data till 18 January, UP has witnessed the maximum seizure of Rs 71.32 crore (Rs 31.65 lakh in old currency notes) followed by Rs 8.81 crore from Punjab, Rs 25.54 lakh in Uttarakhand and Rs 6.95 lakh in Manipur.
Among other illegal inducements used to bribe voters during the polls, the maximum of 1.98 lakh litres liquor worth Rs 6.06 crore has been seized in Uttar Pradesh while 10,646 litres of spirit has been seized in Punjab, valued at Rs 17.54 lakh.
However, officials said a total of “Rs 80.44 crore in cash, about 3 lakh litres of liquor and an estimated Rs 6.55 crore worth narcotics have been seized in the five poll-bound states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur, till data recorded up to last Wednesday.”
The Election Commission of India has deputed about 200 election observers with a view to keeping a tab on activities like black money, illegal inducements used to bribe voters and any exercise related to the Assembly elections.
These five states will hold assembly polls between February 4 and March 8 and the results from all five states will be known on March 11.
