SC calls 4G restoration on trial basis in Jammu and Kashmir ‘fairly good start’

Postpaid Mobile in Kashmir

New Delhi, Aug 11 : The Centre on Tuesday informed the Supreme Court that the special committee constituted to examine restoration of 4G services in Jammu and Kashmir has agreed to provide the high speed Internet access on a trial basis in limited areas.

Attorney General K.K. Venugopal appearing for the Centre before a bench headed by Justice N.V. Ramana said that restrictions on Internet will be lifted on trial basis at certain geographical locations. It will be at one location in each district.

The Centre informed the court that the relaxation from August 16, in one district each of Jammu and Kashmir division will be assessed after two months. The government also said that blanket restoration of 4G in the UT would not be possible due to threats to security.

The apex court remarked “this is a fairly a good start”, and commended the Centre’s decision. The bench also observed that it hoped the situation would improve and the access could later be expanded.

The Centre submitted that the special committee held its meeting on August 10, and explored multiple options in the backdrop of security situation in the union territory. They recommended opening up of 4G in specified areas of low intensity terrorist activities, not on international border even in the trial basis.

Senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, appearing for the petitioner NGO, said: “Today is a good and a step forward at least some limited restoration has been made.”

Justice Ramana then closed the contempt case following the Centre’s submission.

The bench had given two weeks time to the Centre to file a reply on the intervention application. The contempt petition was filed by the NGO alleging that the Centre has not formed a special committee to review Internet restrictions in the UT despite the apex court’s order.

Google Maps arrives on CarPlay Dashboard, Apple Watch

Google Maps is now also available on the Apple Watch so you can get your walking, biking and driving directions right on your wrist.

Don’t expect to get a full-blown Maps app on your wrist, though. The new app is mostly focused on giving you directions to known places (think home, work, etc.). To start navigating to other destinations, you still have to start on your phone and then “pick up where you left off on your watch,” Google explains.

A few years ago, Google already offered a version of Maps for Apple’s  watch but then dropped support in 2017. The Google Maps app for watchOS will roll out worldwide in the coming weeks.

In addition to the new Maps app on watchOS, Google Maps now features slightly deeper integration with Apple’s CarPlay, thanks to iOS 13.4 now supporting third-party apps on the dashboard. If you’re a regular Google Maps user on CarPlay, you may know the frustration of using the CarPlay dashboard, only to be kicked back to seeing Apple Maps.

Apple originally launched support for third-party navigation apps in CarPlay with the launch of iOS 12. At the time, though, those apps were restricted to full-screen mode. With this update, you can now continue to see your Google Maps directions and still see your media controls or calendar at the same time.

WhatsApp to soon sync your chat history on multiple devices

Being able to use WhatsApp across devices also means that your chat history is going to be synced on all of them.

New Delhi, Aug 10 : Facebook-owned WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will soon allow its over two billion users sync their chat history on at least four different devices.

Currently, WhatsApp works on a single device and it is not possible to use the account on multiple devices, a most requested demand from the users.

According to WABetainfo, a website that tracks WhatsApp in Beta, the messaging app is working on the possibility to use the same account on different devices.

“They are testing the feature in order to work with 4 devices at the same time,” the report said on Sunday.

WhatsApp is already working on to create an interface for Android as well as iOS.

“When the user wants to use WhatsApp on a second device, there is the need to copy the chat history. In this case, WhatsApp always requires a Wi-Fi connection, because it may use a large amount of your data plan,” said the report.

When WhatsApp has safely copied the chat history to the second device, it will be finally possible to use your account from it.

“Note that any message will be delivered to all your family devices, so your chat history will be always synced across platforms, and when you use or remove a device, your encryption key changes,” said the report.

When the encryption key changes during the process, all active chats will be notified.

WhatsApp has also reportedly developed an iPad app that will be released after the activation of the feature, so you will be able to use WhatsApp on your iPhone and your iPad at the same time.

The company used WhatsApp for Desktop for this test.

It is possible that WhatsApp will allow mobile devices to be connected to your main device later than WhatsApp for Desktop, according to the report.

Currently, one can simultaneously access one WhatsApp account both from a PC — through WhatsApp Web – and a smartphone.
