Mumbai, Jan 30: Apparently attacking the BJP led NDA government at the Centre, Maharashtra minister and Nationalist Congress Party MLA Jitendra Awhad on Wednesday warned the Narendra Modi government that it should draw lessons from the emergency period of former PM Indira Gandhi and said “history will be repeated in Maharashtra and the country” .
Cautioning the Modi government that BJP will be removed from power as democracy is being strangulated, Awhad made the comments during a rally against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR).
The state Cabinet minister asserted that Maharashtra stands against the CAA, NRC and NPR, and that “history will be repeated in Maharashtra and the country”, referring to the downfall of Gandhi’s tenure.
“Indira Gandhi had also strangulated democracy…nobody was ready to speak against her. Then, students from Ahmedabad and Patna protested and the JP movement started leading to her defeat. This history will be repeated in Maharashtra and the country,” Awhad said at the rally in Beed district.
The Shiv Sena joined hands with the NCP and the Congress to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra .
The NCP leader slammed the central government over CAA and NRC.
“Ab tu maangega mujhse saboot mere deshvasi hone ka? Toh sunn, jab tera baap sar jhukakar angrezon ke talwe chaat raha tha, tab mera baap phansi ke takht ko choomke inquilab zindabad ke naare laga raha tha (Who are you to demand proof of my citizenship? When your forefathers were surrendering to the British dictators, my ancestors were embracing the noose shouting slogans of Inquilab Zindabad),” he had said.
