GUWAHATI: The Gauhati high court on Friday granted interim bail to intellectual Hiren Gohain and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti leader Akhil Gogoi who were slapped with sedition charges for allegedly making ‘inflammatory statements’ during a public rally held here on January 7 in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

Senior advocate Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury, one of the counsels of the accused, said, “In our argument, we submitted that our clients’ speeches were not anti-India and don’t attract the sections of sedition. They have only participated in a public rally and were not involved in any conspiracy to wage war against the nation as police claimed. While the court granted interim bail to Gohain and Gogoi, it gave absolute bail to Mahanta.”
