Himachal Rains: Bridge over Beas river in Kullu Collapses

Shimla, Aug 18 : A portion of the bridge over Beas river in Akhara Bazaar area of Kullu town in Himachal Pradesh collapses after the water level in the river increases due to heavy rainfall in the region. while fresh snowfall was witnessed in higher reaches of Keylong in Lahaul-Spiti.

Train services between Shimla and Kalka were disrupted on Sunday after multiple landslides blocked the rail route in Himachal Pradesh, a rail official said. A Shimla-bound train from Kalka had started at 3 am but had to be terminated midway. The services are likely to resume on Monday after the track is cleared.

Incessant rainfall triggered landslides, snapped road links, closing of hydropower projects and release excess water from a dam,

However light to moderate rainfall is very likely to continue in southern parts, including Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Mandi, Kinnaur, Bilaspur and Kullu, the Met office added.

xcess water was released from the Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd’s (SJVNL) 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri plant – India’s largest hydro project in Kinnaur district, which led to flooding in the Satluj river.

However, the inflow of water into state’s Pong and Bhakra dam increased dramatically due to heavy rainfall, but the authorities said there was no need for worry as the reservoirs still have surplus capacity to withhold additional water.

The entire Kangra district has been experiencing heavy rain for the past two days.

A labourer was killed while six others were injured as the wall of a house collapsed after heavy rains in Shimla today, the police said.
