Himachal Pradesh: Gangster killed by Punjab Police

Shimla, July 14: Punjab Police on Saturday killed a gangster and held two of his accomplices in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh after a brief encounter.

However, two others managed to flee from the encounter site in Naina Devi.

“A team of Punjab Police was chasing five gangsters, who snatched a car from Sohana in Mohali (in Punjab). As the police signaled the criminals to stop their vehicle, one of them fired at the police. The police retaliated and fired back. One of the criminals died in the process,” Bilaspur Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar told IANS.

The deceased criminal was identified as Sunny Masih of Gurdaspur.

While the other two who were arrested have been identified as Amanpreet and Goldy were arrested and the hunt is on for the remaining two.

According to the police, several cases of extortion have been registered against the criminals in Punjab.

Court frames charges against ex-Minister Somnath Bharti

New Delhi, July 17 :A court here framed charges of molestation and trespass against Delhi’s former Law Minister Somnath Bharti, paving the way for trial in a case lodged after the Malviya Nagar MLA barged into the homes of nine Ugandan nationals in Khirki Extension, along with some followers, on the intervening night of January 15-16, 2014.

After Bharti and others pleaded not guilty and claimed trial, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Samar Vishal posted the matter to September 4 for recording the statement of the prosecution witnesses.

The Patiala House Court in Delhi had on June 29 ordered that charges be framed against Bharti and 16 others in the case

The court framed charges against Bharti under various IPC sections, including rioting, molestation, wrongful confinement, outraging a woman’s modesty, assault and criminal trespass.

Bharti had alleged that he had received many complaints from residents of the area about a drug and prostitution ring being run by the Ugandan nationals. But no drug recovery was made that night. Two FIRs were filed against Bharti. He also had an altercation with the police.

The police chargesheet cited around 41 prosecution witnesses, including nine African women, to buttress the charges.

The police lodged an FIR on January 19, 2014 against “unknown accused” on the court’s direction and booked them for various charges.

The two Ugandan women had sought registration of an FIR against unknown people for creating a ruckus during the raid between 1 a.m and 3 a.m at Khirki Extension.

In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Sagar recorded 37.4 mm of rains, Khandwa 29 mm, Pachmarhi 28 mm, Umaria 26.8 mm, Seoni 18.6 mm, Betul 18.4 mm, Mandla 11 mm, Indore 8.6 mm, Ujjain 8 mm, Jabalpur 8.2 mm and Bhopal 7.2 mm of rains.

As per Skymet Weather, the well-marked low-pressure area prevailing over the interior parts of Odisha will also move towards Madhya Pradesh. Therefore, heavy to very heavy rains are expected over many districts of Madhya Pradesh during the next 48 hours. Places such as Narsinghpur, Hoshangabad, Raisen, Jabalpur, Umaria, Damoh, Bhopal, Dewas and Vidisha will record hefty Monsoon rains.

11-year-old girl ‘sexually harassed’ for 7 months in Chennai, 18 held

New Delhi, July 17: Eighteen men have been arrested for allegedly sexually harassing an 11-year-old girl in Chennai. The girl was allegedly sexually harassed for over 7 months at an apartment building in Chennai.

The accused involve security men, lift operator and water suppliers in the apartment where the minor girl stays.

The police investigation into the case is underway.

The girl was allegedly sedated and given spiked soft drinks. The police also said that she was also blackmailed.

The matter came to light after the victim, a class seven student had narrated the sequence of incidents to her elder sister, who later brought this to the notice of their parents, following which a complaint was lodged on Monday, a senior police officer told news agency PTI.

Later, her mother approached the police and filed a complaint in connection with the case on Sunday.
