New Delhi, Dec 16: While addressing her last speech as the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi on Saturday said our country’s foundation and shared traditions are being attacked, adding there is an environment of fear in the contemporary India.

“Since 2014 we have been playing the role of opposition, the challenge that we face today, is the biggest one, our constitutional values are being attacked, our party has also lost many elections but our party will never bow down”, she told a gathering at the Congress Headquarters  after Rahul Gandhi took over as the head of the country’s oldest party.

As it was a proud movement for the mother Sonia Gandhi, she said “Rahul is my son, so I do not think for me to praise him is right but I would say that since childhood he had to bear the brunt of the violence. After joining politics he had to face blatant personal attacks, that have made him a stronger person”.

Speaking about her relationship with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, she stated “Indira ji accepted me as her daughter, and I learned a lot about Indian culture and tradition  from her. I learned about those principles upon which the foundation of our country was laid”.

“In 1984, Indira ji was assassinated and I felt I had lost my mother and that incident changed my life forever”, Sonia Gandhi added.

New Delhi, 15 Dec: In his first speech as Congress President Rahul Gandhi said,” Politics belongs to the people, but today politics is not being used for people. It is not being used to uplift people, but to crush them.”

Talking about the changing scenario of Indian Politics the newly elected Congress president said,”Many of us are disillusioned by politics of our time. Today, politics is devoid of kindness and truth .”

Meanwhile, Rahul also criticised Prime minister Narendra Modi for taking Indian politics to an era of undemocratic rule, he said, “Congress took India to the 21st century, but the PM, today, is taking us back to the medieval times.”

To motivate the Congress party workers Rahul said that only Congress and its ‘pyara karyakarta & neta’ could save the country from BJP’s violent political tactics.

Addressing Congress party workers and all delegates Rahul talked about his feelings on becoming the President of a 132 years old party, he said,”It is with the deepest humility, that I accept this position (of Congress President) knowing that I will always be walking in the shadow of giants.”

“Congress is an ancient India. BJP would have you believe they are the oldest idea in the universe, as usual, this is not the truth. In India, there are 2 ideas that have clashed, the idea of self vs the other.BJP are soldiers fighting for self. Congress guided by service of the community,” he added.

Taking a jibe at Modi’s way of politics Rahul said,”We are now being compelled to imagine that businesses can be built without harmony that only one man himself is the voice of reason. Expertise, experience and knowledge can be cast aside for personal glory .”

Rahul Gandhi also said,”You have an example in front of you, once the fire breaks out it is difficult to douse it, that is what we are telling the people of BJP, that if you set the nation on fire it will be difficult to control. Today BJP has spread the fire of violence across the country.”

Manmohan Singh

New Delhi, Dec 16: While speaking at Rahul Gandhi’s coronation former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday said that the 47-year-old leader was taking over as the new Congress President amid “disturbing trends” as “politics of fear” was taking over the “politics of hope” in the country.

“Rahulji is taking over as President of our party at a time when there are certain disturbing trends visible in our politics,” Manmohan Singh told a gathering at the Congress Headquarters.

The former Prime Minister noted that a “distinguished academician” has pointed out that “there are dangers that politics of fear will take over the politics of hope” in India.

“Rahulji, we depend upon you to transform and sustain politics of hope,” he asserted.

Singh said Rahul Gandhi had been trained for a long period and had already looked after many activities of the Congress for many years now.

“Rahulji brings in a new sense of dedication and commitment, a new sense of leadership with courage and humility.”

Manmohan Singh said it was “a unique day in the history of the Indian National Congress” with Sonia Gandhi handing over the reins of the party to her son.

Hailing Sonia Gandhi’s contribution as the Congress President for 19 years, Singh said “provided a powerful leadership”.

“Today is a historic day for India… Please pardon me if I get somewhat emotional,” Manmohan Singh said.

“Now that Soniaji is handing over the reins of the party to Rahulji, we salute Soniaji for uniting the leadership, something that she has been doing for the last 19 years.”
