Heavy rains leads to landslide on Gangotri highway in Uttarakhand


Dehradun, Aug 30: Around five dozen people left stranded in Gangotri following heavy downpour that triggered a landslide in the region on Tuesday morning, an official said.

The priest of the Gangnani Garmkund temple, who was stuck under the debris was also saved, an official said.

The landslide occurred on the Gangotri highway.

Lightening had also struck Kaliyar area near Roorkie, killing three while more than a dozen people were injured in a related incident in Paudi.

Most parts of Uttarkashi have been pounded by heavy rainfall since Monday evening leading to caving in of some ‘kuccha’ houses and landslides on the Gangotri highway.

The regional Met department has forecast light to moderate showers in the hill state on Tuesday.
