Gunmen attack Kabul’s shiite shrine, 14 killed

Afghanistan, Oct 12, 2016: At least 14 people killed and 36 others injured after a number of gunmen have reportedly opened fire on a crowd of Shiite pilgrims who had gathered outside a shrine in the west of Kabul city.

The gunmen attacked the Imam Ali shrine in the vicinity of Karte Sakhi area of the city.

Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi confirmed the area has been cleared and the last attacker was shot dead.

Sediqi further added that the number of casualties will be released later.

However, a security source confirmed that 14 people were killed and around 36 others were wounded in the attack which was launched around 7:30 pm.

Shiites will on Wednesday commemorate Ashoura Day, the climax of a month of mourning for the death of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Iman Hussain, in 680 AD.

Kabul police had warned Shiites against large gatherings as attacks were expected. A July attack on Shiite Hazaras killed at least 80 people.
