The Gujarat High Court on Thursday revoked the State government’s notification granting 10% quota for EBCs (Economically backward classes) in education institution.
The Gujarat government in April, had announced to implement 10% quota in admission for students those who are members of economically backward classes, including the existing reservation for SCs, STs, and OBCs.
The decision was taken under the Anandiben Patel’s government, the move was not legally prospected, as it was added on the existing 49% reservation for OBC, SC and St in the state.
The government regime had granted the quota that was aimed to help families with an annual income of less than Rs 6 lakh per annum.
However, Gujarat Patidar community who is demanding for reservation also comes under the general category. They gets benefits from the government on the reserve Kota. Kamlesh Patel of Patidar community was jailed under the treason agitation on demanding the reservation, which later turned violent.
The Supreme Court dictates that no state can have over 50% reservation.
