Govt misused CVC to save itself from Rafale probe: Congress on Alok Verma’s removal

New Delhi, Jan 11: The Congress on Friday alleged that the Narendra Modi government misused the Central Vigilance Commission to remove Alok Verma as the CBI Chief to save itself from Rafale Deal probe.

Addressing a press conference, Senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said ” It is the Committee that gets to decide the removal of chief of office as high as CBI. The least you have to do as a Committee is to hear his side before removing him. Mr. Kharge repeatedly asked for the same”.

“CVC neither has a role of appointing the CBI Chief nor removing him”.

The Congress leader further said that “6 of the 10 allegations made by CVC are considered unsubstantiated by CVC itself”.

“Regarding one of the remaining 4 charges, the CVC report says that there is “no evidence of payment of bribe”, and that “further investigation required for verifying circumstantial evidence”, he added.

Singhvi stated “Committee has removed CBI Chief Alok Verma based on allegations of Rakesh Asthana, whose plea to quash the FIR against him was dismissed by High Court and ordered a time-bound investigation against him”.

Is it not strange that Rakesh Asthana, who himself is under investigation in an FIR, was the basis of CBI Chief Alok Verma’s removal, the Congress leader asked.
