Gorakhpur tragedy: SC declines to take suo motu cognizance, dismisses plea

New Delhi, Aug 14, 2017: The Supreme Court of India on Monday refused to hear a petition requesting it to take suo motu cognizance of the deaths of childrens at Gorakhpur’s BRD hospital in Uttar Pradesh.

The apex court asked the petitioner to approach the Allahabad High Court in the issue. The plea had also sought an Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe in the matter.

Over 60 children have reportedly died at BRD Medical College Hospital since August 7, many for want of oxygen whose supply was disrupted after bill of Rs 67 lakh was not cleared.

On Sunday, hours after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s visit to the Baba Raghav Das Medical College, along with Union Minister J P Nadda, Dr Kafeel Khan was removed as the Nodal Officer for the pediatrics department citing “negligence of duty”.

Adityanath promised strict action against those responsible. “The guilty will not be spared and such strict action would be taken by the Uttar Pradesh government that it would set an example for people to work with discipline,” said Adityanath.
