Goa, Dec 20: A British national was raped and robbed by an unidentified person in Goa’s Canacona on Thursday.
The city has arrested a 30-year-old man from Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu in connection with the incident.
Superintendent of Police (South Goa) Arvind Gawas told media that CCTV footage near the scene of the offence and at the local railway station helped police track down the accused at the Margao railway station, located 35 km from Canacona village.
“The accused has been identified as Ramachandran, 30, and is from Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. We arrested him as he was trying to flee from the Margao police station,” Gawas said.
The crime took place around 4 am in Canacona town, when the woman was going towards the Palolem beach in South Goa district.
The incident occurred at 4.30 a.m. when the victim was walking from the Canacona railway station to her rented home near Palolem village, Police Inspector Rajendra Prabhudessai told media.
Canacona taluka is a popular tourist destination with famous beaches such as Agonda and Palolem.
Earlier in October this year, a 33-year-old Russian woman was gang-raped in Manali area of Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district.
