Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 21: The Kerala Police on Friday arrested former Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal after questioning him for three consecutive days over rape allegations levelled by a nun against him, IANS reported citing police sources.
The former bishop was interrogated by a 5-member team including Inspector General Vijay Sakhre, Kottayam Superintendent Harishankar and his deputy K. Subhash.
Yesterday the Vatican relieved Mulakkal of his pastoral duties in the diocese of Jalandhar.
The Kerala High Court will hear Mulakkal’s anticipatory bail plea on September 25.
Earlier, refuting the allegations, he had described rape allegations against him as a conspiracy.
“I feel there are people who are against the church, they’re using these sisters. This is a conspiracy and several people are taking advantage of the situation, they are putting sisters at the forefront”, Mulakkal had told media.
A 44-year-old Kerala based Nun has alleged that she was raped several times between 2014 to 2016.
Later, an FIR was registered against the bishop on June 27 this year.
