Surat, Sep 24: The police held five persons for alleged theft attempt into fugitive diamond businessman Nirav Modi’s sealed diamond unit in Surat.

Diamantaire Modi is under the ED and CBI scanner for allegedly defrauding Punjab National Bank of over Rs 13,400 crore.

Earlier in February, the Surat and Mumbai Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials had conducted raids at the factories owned by Nirav Modi.

The officials had seized several documents, finished and unfinished diamond jewellery and loose polished diamonds worth thousands of crores of rupees from his firms and later sealed the factories.

The nationalised bank detected the multi-crore scam in February this year, wherein celebrity jewelry designer Nirav Modi and business Associate Mehul Choksi are accused.

Modi, his family and Choksi had reportedly left the country in early January.
