‘Fanney Khan’ trailer a heartwarming ode to Lata Mangeshkar

Published

New Delhi, July 6: “I couldn’t be Mohammed Rafi. But I will make you Lata Mangeshkar,” promises papa Anil Kapoor to his overweight screen daughter, the spontaneous and endearing debutante Pihu Sand, whose dreams and aspirations are trailed by her father all the way to the next reality show.

But wait. If you think this is a routine tearjerker about a failed singer who wants his daughter to fulfill his dreams, then there is much more here to feast on. There is a major goofed-up kidnapping where the stunning Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, playing a singer who seems to be more a dancer, is whisked away by two inept kidnappers, played by Anil and his screen-ally Rajkummar Rao.

The official remake of a Belgian film “Everybody’s Famous”, “Fanney Khan” is a winsome ode to the imperishable reputation of Lata Mangeshkar as the queen of all things melodious. It spotlights and contours the Nightingale’s aura with endearing humour and warmth and gives us a spunky 17-year old heroine who won’t be cowed down by her parents’ middle-class anxieties.

The trailer gives us some sparkling performances by all the actors.

The narrative seems to be spun around the harsh glare of reality shows where children are constantly subjected to scrutiny and ridicule. At one such event, an insensitive judge is heard telling our young heroine, “Just because your parents have named you Lata, you think you can sing?”

Just because “Fanney Khan” uses the names of singing legends like Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi, it doesn’t qualify for greatness.

Having said that, there is a distinct warmth and incredulity to the presentation that are bound to go a long way in making this film sparkle in a melodious rapture.

Fanney Khan is an official remake of 73rd Academy Awards nominee Belgian film Everybody’s Famous! The satirical comedy film released in the year 2000, narrates the story of a young girl who is forced to be a musical star by her parents.

The film marks the reunion of Aishwarya and Anil after a gap of 18 long years. The duo was last seen together in the 2000 film ‘Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai’.

Directed by Atul Manjrekar and co-produced by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and T-Series, Fanney Khan is scheduled to hit the theatres on August 3. It will clash with Irrfan Khan and Dulquer Salmaan starrer ‘Karwaan’ at the box office.

Navjot Singh Sidhu met with harsh criticism after he spoke about the Pulwama terror attack.

New Delhi, Feb 16: Cricketer turned Politician Navjot Singh Sidhu has been sacked from the ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ following his controversial comments on the Pulwama terror attack.

“The channel has already started with the process of removing Navjot and will replace him with Arachana Puran singh, news agency ANI quoted the sources as saying.

Reacting on the Pulwama terror attack, which left 40 CRPF personnel killed, Sidhu on Friday had stated “For a handful of people, can you blame the entire nation and can you blame an individual? It is a cowardly act and I condemn it firmly. Violence is always condemnable and those who did it must be punished,”.

The former cricketer’s comments were met with harsh criticism and since then social media has been flooded with posts demanding his exit from The Kapil Sharma Show.

Check out some of the tweets below:

This is not the first time Sidhu has landed himself in soup for his soft stand on our neighbouring country.

Sidhu had triggered a controversy last year when he attended Pakistan Prime Minister, Imran Khan’s swearing-in-ceremony. He was much criticised for hugging Pakistan Army chief, General Qamar Javed Bajwa as well.

Hansal Mehta

Mumbai, Feb 16: Disturbed after the deadly Pulwama attack, filmmaker Hansal Mehta says Pakistan’s complicity in the business of terrorism should come to an end.

Hansal on Saturday took to Twitter to share his views. He also shared details about his 2017 film “Omerta” starring Rajkummar Rao. It is based on British-Pakistani terrorist Omar Saeed Sheikh’s life.

“While ‘Omerta’ was based on Omar Saeed Sheikh, it was also about the patronage provided to men like Masood Azhar, Omar Sheikh, Hafiz Saeed by the state of Pakistan. Pakistan’s complicity in the business of terrorism must be ended, with brute force if needed,” he posted.

In the worst ever terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir since militancy erupted in 1989, a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) suicide bomber on Thursday rammed his vehicle packed with explosives into a CRPF bus on the Jammu-Srinagar highway in Pulwama district, killing at least 40 troopers on the spot.

After the strike, India rejected Pakistan Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua’s claims denying her country’s links to the attack, saying that JeM, which claimed responsibility for the strike, is based in Pakistan, and the “links are clear and evident and for all to see”.

The attack has left the security establishment stunned as it created the biggest casualty of security personnel in a single day in peace time.
