Facebook may launch chat device with face recognition ability

London, Aug 25: Social networking giant Facebook is reportedly working towards rolling out a video chat device that can recognise users’ faces.

The proposed device is said to be similar to the Amazon Echo Show, and will feature a camera, touchscreen and speakers, the Independent reported on Thursday.

But the device has also raised fears among consumers that it could be used by the social network to spy on them, thereby casting doubt on whether the device would have all the features as intended when it is finally launched.

Codenamed Project Aloha, the device is set to be released by Facebook in May 2018.

However, it may hit the market under a new brand name, the report said.

The device is likely to be marketed as a tool to help old people communicate with their families and friends.

Google discusses data privacy before Senate hearing

Washington, Sep 26: As US lawmakers geared up to grill tech giants again on data privacy, Google said the organisations must operate with respect for individuals’ interests when they process personal information.

In a three-page framework, Google said companies must be transparent about the types of personal information they collect, why they collect it, and how they use or disclose it, particularly when used to make decisions about the individual.

The Google framework came as the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation was set to discuss data privacy on Wednesday with tech companies including Google, Apple, AT&T, Amazon and Twitter.

In a blog post on Tuesday, Google Chief Privacy Officer Keith Enright said the users have long entrusted the company to be responsible with their data and they take that trust and responsibility very seriously.

“Google products and features cannot launch until they are approved by the specialists in our Privacy and Data Protection Office, which solicits input from across Google, as well as periodically from users and experts worldwide,” said Enright.

“More than any other time I have worked in this field, there is real momentum to develop baseline rules of the road for data protection. Google welcomes this and supports comprehensive, baseline privacy regulation,” he added.

Enright, who will be present at the Senate panel meeting, shared the company’s thoughts on what data protection regulation should look like in the US.

“People deserve to feel comfortable that all entities that use personal information will be held accountable for protecting it.

“We believe that regulation can support a dynamic marketplace for businesses of all types and sizes,” Enright noted, adding that he looks forward to working with policymakers and all stakeholders on regulation that protects consumers and enables innovation.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai is also heading to Washington, DC amid “concerns about privacy, suspicion about his company’s relationship with China” and a reported “censored Search” engine for the country.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, Pichai will meet with Republican lawmakers on Friday and plans to testify before a House Judiciary Committee hearing after the mid-term elections in November.

Samsung launches ‘Galaxy A7’ with triple camera in India

New Delhi, Sep 25: Samsung India on Tuesday launched Galaxy A7 with triple rear cameras for Rs 23,990 in blue, black and gold colours.

The smartphone is slated to be available in over 180,000 outlets by September-end. It will be available on September 27 and 28 during a special preview sale on Flipkart, Samsung e-shop and at Samsung Opera House in Bengaluru.

“We are expecting to disrupt the market and gain significant share specifically in our ‘A Series’. So this is the first triple camera phone that we are bringing to the market which we have not even launched in our flagship segment but the whole idea is to really expand this series,” Mohandeep Singh, Senior Vice President, Mobile Business, Samsung India told IANS.

The Galaxy A7 sports 24MP main + 5MP live focus + 8MP ultra-wide sensors at the rear and a 24 MP selfie shooter.

The device features a 6.0-inch FHD+ super AMOLED Infinity Display and also supports Dolby Atmos immersive sound technology that brings HD content to life.

It has a 2.5D glass back design, 7.5-mm body and a side fingerprint sensor which has been integrated into the power button itself.

“The new colours and a side fingerprint sensor deliver a refreshed design. We are confident that with this device, we will capture the imagination of the Indian millennial and be able to add to the celebrations during the festive season,” said Sumit Walia, Director, Mobile Business, Samsung India.

Galaxy A7 is powered by a Samsung’s proprietary Exynos 7885 2.2GHz octa-core processor.

The device will be available in 6GB RAM+128GB storage and 4GB RAM+64GB storage configurations.

The smartphone is powered by a 3300mAh battery and runs Android Oreo operating system (OS).

Samsung is offering cash back worth Rs 2,000 on the smartphone when buyers make payment through HDFC bank credit and debit cards.

Adobe, Microsoft and SAP announce Open Data Initiative

Orlando, Sep 25: In an effort to empower companies to derive more value from their data and deliver better customer experiences, Adobe, Microsoft and SAP have introduced the Open Data Initiative (ODI).

Announced at the “Microsoft Ignite” conference here late on Monday, the initiative will enhance data exchange between the applications and platforms offered by the three companies.

“Together with Adobe and SAP, we are taking a first, critical step to helping companies achieve a level of customer and business understanding that has never before been possible,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

“Organisations everywhere have a massive opportunity to build AI-powered digital feedback loops for predictive power, automated workflows and, ultimately, improved business outcomes,” he added.

Companies around the world use software and services from Adobe, Microsoft and SAP to run product development, operations, finance, marketing, sales, human resources and more.

The core focus of the Open Data Initiative is to eliminate data silos and enable a single view of the customer, helping companies to better govern their data and support privacy and security initiatives.

“Adobe, Microsoft and SAP are partnering to reimagine the customer experience management category,” said Shantanu Narayen, CEO, Adobe.

“Together, we will give enterprises the ability to harness and action massive volumes of customer data to deliver personalised, real-time customer experiences at scale,” he added.

According to Bill McDermott, CEO of SAP, the three companies understand that the customer experience is no longer a sales management conversation.

With the open data initiative, we will help businesses run with a true single view of the customer,” said McDermott.
