Ex-BSP MP’s son Ashish Pandey sent to one-day police custody

New Delhi, Oct 18: Delhi’s Patiala House court on Thursday sent former BSP MP son Ashish Pandey,  who was seen brandishing a gun and threatening a couple outside Delhi’s Hyatt Regency hotel on October 14 to one-day police custody. He will be again presented before the court on Friday.

Delhi Police had earlier moved a plea seeking 4-day custody of Pandey.

Rakesh Pandey’s son, Ashish surrendered before Metropolitan Magistrate Dharmendra Singh at the Patiala House Court earlier today, a day after a non-bailable warrant (NBW) was issued against him.

Ashish Pandey was on the run since the early Sunday morning incident at the Hyatt Regency Hotel here when a video clip showed him threatening a man who was with a woman by holding a pistol in his right hand.

The hotel did not report the matter to the police, which has also filed a case against Hyatt.

In a video clip released on Thursday, Ashish Pandey alleged that the entire incident was being reported in a biased way.

“The CCTV footage should be shown to clarify who entered the ladies’ washroom and who threatened whom,” said a subdued Ashish Pandey, speaking in Hindi.

“I accept I moved out of my car with a weapon (but) neither did I point it at anyone nor did I show it,” he said in the message reportedly addressed to the media.

On Wednesday, a non-bailable warrant was issued against him by the court after an FIR was lodged.

According to police, Ashish Pandey’s argument took place in the porch area of the hotel.

Ashish Pandey said he was a businessman but was consistently being referred to only as a politician’s son. “I am a businessman. To be a politician’s son or brother isn’t a crime.”

He stressed that he doesn’t have a criminal record. “Not even a single case has been filed against me. It was a licensed weapon that I had.”

He said the man he had the scuffle with at the hotel “threatened to kill me”.

“Please take statements from the hotel staff. They will tell you everything,” he said.

An FIR was lodged against Ashish Pandey at Delhi’s RK Puram police station under Arms Act after a video of him brandishi a pistol and threatening a couple outside Delhi’s Hyatt hotel on October 14 went viral.
